An emerging partnership between Freedom Through Learning and the Canada-Mathare Education Trust is helping to make a difference in the lives of young learners in Nairobi’s second largest slum.

FTL supporters Paul & Sherri Hyde and Sal & Irene Cacciotti (all from Canada) recently visited the MCEDO Secondary School in Mathare. The two couples (along with Betty and Dennis Stembridge, also from Canada) donated $500 to purchase science resources for the school. The science program at MCEDO has, until this point, been very basic because of a lack of any lab equipment or science resources. Now, however, as a result of the Hyde/Cacciotti/Stembridge donation, students have access to models of human body parts (the eye, the brain, etc.), posters of biological processes and, most importantly, test tubes, chemicals and equipment to perform experiments. The teachers and students at the MCEDO School were thrilled to receive the science supplies, and FTL looks forward to finding donors who can even further establish a working science lab at the school.
